Theydon Bois Village Hall

New members are very welcome. You can pay to become a member on

on Tuesdays and Thursdays (with a few Wednesdays swapped in.) There will also be a couple of Sunday rehearsals.

Lilies on the Land charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to

join the Women’s Land Army during World War II, determined to work endless,

backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their bit for the war effort.

Based on 150 letters and interviews with original Land Girls, along with songs from the

period, this is a revealing, funny and wonderfully moving portrait of some of Britain’s

pluckiest unsung heroes.

Characters - Female

Margie – From Newcastle, a townie, who is naïve and childlike, though not childish.

She describes herself as pretty. She is warm and constantly in a state of surprise.

Peggy – A happy, confident young cockney from a large East End Family; she doesn’t

know one end of a cow from another. Rolls her sleeves up and gets stuck in.

Poppy – From Oxfordshire, she has been brought up in a happy privileged family and

is used to a comfortable lifestyle. The tough life on the land is a shock, but she is

enthusiastic and ready to learn.

Vera – A complex character, she asks questions and expects to make her own way,

likes to muck in and yet isn’t really one of the girls; she’s educated and frustrated with

old fashioned views of women.

Annie – A Land Army girl who may also play other small roles

1 Female (aged approx 30 -60) a character actor to play a variety of roles contd/

Male

Male (aged 50 +) a character actor with a variety of lines, accents (and costumes!)

Male (aged 30-40) – a character actor also with a variety of lines (and hats!)

Please Note

Our director does not have any fixed idea about the ages of the Land Girls. They could be in their 20’s or in their 50’s, or somewhere in between. It will depend on ability and fit, and finding the right combination. It is not essential that Margie has a Newcastle accent but ideally, she should have a Northern England accent. Each individual has quite specific characteristics. The ability to convey actions and recall anecdotes through mime will be necessary.

All the cast (including the men) will need to be able to sing unaccompanied, but most

of the songs are very well known such as:

“Run Rabbit Run”,

“Oh my Darling Clementine”

“Would You Like to Swing on a Star”

”What a friend we have in Jesus”

“There is a Green Hill Far Away”

“Silent Night”

“She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain”

For the Land Army Girls, there will also be some gentle dancing to “Chattanooga Choo

Choo”.

Other Music/Singers

In addition to the main cast, our director is hoping to create a small group of harmony singers to appear a couple of times in the play but also possibly also to sing a few war time songs in the foyer before the show and perhaps during the interval - hopefully with

backing tracks. Auditions/ singing workshops will be on a separate date - TBC

I am really looking forward to starting this play and for us all to become part of the

Land Girls’ journey.
