This hilarious comedy is the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York socialite and amateur lyric soprano who was mocked by her critics as the worst singer in the world, but admired and adored by many others. At the age of 76 she gave her only public performance at Carnegie Hall in October 1944, a month before her death. Based on a Florence’s charity recitals, bizarre recording sessions and her ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall, it’s a funny and heart-warming play. The film Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, was released in 2016.
Dramatis Personae
Florence Foster Jenkins
An eccentric American lady with a slightly upper class Bostonian accent. Will be required to sing - badly! Singing required at audition. Playing age late 50s to 60s.
Cosme McMoon
Pianist. Closet gay, as appropriate to the era. Unsure about Florence on first meeting but comes to love and admire her. Required to play piano live on stage and to play at audition. Playing age 25-50.
St Clair
Florence’s English boyfriend. Speaks with cut glass English accent. Playing age 60s.
Dorothy
Florence’s dear admiring friend. American accent. Playing age 40-60.
Maid
Speaks only Spanish. Male or female. Comedy role. Playing age 20-60.
Mrs Verrinder-Gedge
American lady who does not approve of Florence and her awful voice. Playing age 40-70.
NB: The only character with an English accent is St Clair.
This is an ambitious production and will require a lot of commitment from the cast. Be prepared!
