AUDITION NOTICE

The Unfriend by Steven Moffat 

WEDS 4 NOVEMBER 2026 @ 8pm 

(Production dates: 11-13 March 2027)

Our March 2027 production is ‘The Unfriend’ by Steven Moffat (best known for writing a lot of recent ‘Dr Who’ episodes). It is the cautionary tale of how a loud American insinuates herself into the life of an ordinary English family in an ordinary London neighbourhood, charming all that come before her – despite the fact that she may well be a murderer. 

CHARACTERS: Everyone should have a reasonably RP English accent, except for Elsa (American – preferably mid-West, as she comes from Denver) and PC Junkin, who could come from just about anywhere in the UK (he makes reference to having been moved from his original station). There is also an American reporter, who is not seen but will record the voice of the piece that gets looked at on Youtube.

PETER: Any age from 40-60. Permanently worried and a bit harassed

DEBBIE: Any age from 40-60. Peter’s wife. Generally calm and charming – til things really get on top of her.

ALEX: Their teenage son. 

ROSIE: Their teenage or possibly very early 20s daughter

ELSA: The loud American.  Age indeterminate but maybe around 50.  Fills every space she enters and takes over every conversation she is in.

THE NEIGHBOUR: The man (or woman) next door. So boring he can make people fall asleep just by entering the room but also, as Elsa observes, strangely passive aggressive. 50s-70s.

PC JUNKIN: A local policeman or woman. Easy going, straightforward, and amazingly unobservant for a policeman. 30s-60s

THE REPORTER: Appears in voice only, over the top of a video piece. American accent, of the type one hears in film trailer, where the film is full of doom and disaster.

Please note: only members of the Society may audition, but we are happy to take payment on the evening if you want to join there and then.
