THEYDON BOIS DRAMA SOCIETY AUDITION NOTICE

The Girl On The Train

by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel

adapted from the novel by Paula Hawkins and the DreamWorks film

Director: Nick Martin

Show Dates: 4-6 June 2026

Auditions: Wednesday 28 January 2026

Characters

Rachel Watson - The lead role. A divorcee and alcoholic.

Rachel has recently lost her job and seemingly her prospects for the future. She is complicated, jealous, lonely and at times self-destructive. I'm happy to consider actresses between the ages of 30 through to 50ish. This is a big part and ideally I would

like to cast someone in this role who would have very good availability for the rehearsal period.

Anna Watson - Tom Watson's former mistress and current wife, she feels a great deal of anxiety and protectiveness when it comes to her marriage. Anna's hatred of the train tracks which run just below her and Tom's garden represents her fear of confronting the truth about her life and even creating the potential for escape from a situation that is quickly and dangerously spiralling out of control before her eyes. Ideally someone who is a bit younger than whoever plays Rachel.

Megan Hipwell - Megan is an artistic, sensitive woman with a dark past - and she's missing. After marrying the passionate but deeply possessive Scott, Megan quickly finds herself dissatisfied with suburban life and the demands of domesticity.

Megan's scenes will be in flashback. A good role with plenty of dialogue. I want her to be quite haunting, ideally 30s or 40s, but this will depend on who is cast as Scott.

Tom Watson - Tom presents himself as a loving husband, but as Rachel and Anna soon discover, his life is built on a fragile and disturbing web of secrets and lies.

Happy to be fluid in casting from 30s through to early 50s in age range, ideally a bit older than Anna and more in age to Rachel.

Scott Hipwell - Megan's hyper-masculine and volatile husband. Very possessive of Megan, he plays an active role in maintaining the mystery of the play.

Again when it comes to casting I am happy to be open minded about this character, but it has to be someone you could imagine being a good partner for Megan.

Dr Kamal Abdic - Kamal is a therapist who was seeing Megan as a patient. He is determined to help the troubled and restless Megan unspool the traumas of her past. Abdic is a quiet softly spoken man, who does his best to resist Megan's growing romantic feelings for him. Age range: 50 upwards.

Detective Inspector Gaskill – He is in charge of Megan's case. Gaskill is immediately suspicious of Rachel,  but there is not enough evidence to tie her to anything. Gaskill soon realises that Rachel isn't a threat- and his suspicions turn to someone else. Age range: 30 upwards.
